Check conditions before travelling
Brandasund is exposed to the open sea. Wind, rain, waves, currents and visibility can change quickly, even when it is calm inside the sound. Check conditions again shortly before departure and before activities on the outer islands.
Use several sources
An ordinary weather forecast does not always provide enough information for travel at sea. Combine a local weather forecast with wave, wind and current services and a seamanlike assessment of the boat, crew and route.
- Norwegian Coastal Administration wave and current forecast
- BarentsWatch wave forecast
- Norwegian Sea Safety Council boating safety rules
Checklist for the sea
- Weather, wind, waves, currents and visibility
- Current nautical charts and a planned route
- A life jacket for everyone on board
- Communication and a way to call for help
- Fuel or battery capacity with a good safety margin
- An alternative plan if conditions change
Trips on land
Wind and rain also affect trips on land. Rock can become slippery, and winds may be stronger on higher ground and the outer sides of the islands. Wear suitable clothing and footwear, and turn back if conditions become difficult.
Your responsibility
Forecasts and online information are planning tools. Every skipper and visitor must assess the conditions, equipment and their own experience. Follow advice from the responsible authorities and local providers.
